Former President Donald Trump said on Monday that he expects an indictment from Special Counsel Jack Smith “any day now” in the January 6 case.
“I assume that an Indictment from Deranged Jack Smith and his highly partisan gang of Thugs, pertaining to my ‘PEACEFULLY & PATRIOTICALLY Speech, will be coming out any day now, as yet another attempt to cover up all of the bad news about bribes, payoffs, and extortion, coming from the Biden ‘camp.’” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This seems to be the way they do it. ELECTION INTERFERENCE! PROSECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT!”
Smith is investigating Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Trump’s efforts ultimately led to his supporters storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.
Trump revealed earlier this month that he had received a target letter from the Justice Department notifying him that he was a target of their investigation.
The letter reportedly named three federal statutes under which the former president is expected to be charged: Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States; deprivation of rights under color of law; and tampering with a witness, victim, or an informant.
