Former President Donald Trump boasted on Monday that he “openly and transparently” took top secret government records from the White House to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
“…When will you invade Bill and Hillary’s home in search of the 33,000 emails she deleted AFTER receiving a subpoena from the U.S. Congress?” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He continued: “When will you invade the other Presidents’ homes in search of documents, which are voluminous, which they took with them, but not nearly so openly and transparently as I did?”
The Department of Justice is investigating Trump for possible violations of the Espionage Act and other crimes related to obstruction of justice and destroying federal government records, after the FBI recovered classified documents from Mar-a-Lago in August.
Earlier this month, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee the investigation after Trump announced he is running for president in 2024.
“Based on recent developments, including the former president’s announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election, and the sitting president’s stated intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint a special counsel,” Garland said.
