Former President Donald Trump claimed he would end the year-long war in Ukraine in 24 hours if he is re-elected, but did not say how.
Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity that if the war is not over by 2024 and he wins the presidential election, he would negotiate a successful peace deal between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin in one day.
“If it’s not solved, I will have it solved in 24 hours with Zelensky and with Putin, and there’s a very easy negotiation to take place, but I don’t want to tell you what it is because then I can’t use that negotiation,” Trump claimed.
“But it’s a very easy negotiation to take place. I will have it solved within one day, a peace between them. Now that’s a year and a half. That’s a long time. I can’t imagine something not happening,” Trump added.
As usual, Trump did not provide any details of his plan, but he told Fox News host Tucker Carlson earlier this month that opposing Russia in Ukraine is not a “vital American national strategic interest,” but it is for Europe, according to The Washington Post.
Trump also told Hannity in a separate interview on the Fox News host’s radio program this month that he would have made a deal to allow Putin to “take over” parts of Ukraine to prevent the invasion.
“[Putin] would have never done it,” Trump said. “That’s without even negotiating a deal. I could have negotiated. At worst, I could’ve made a deal to take over something, there are certain areas that are Russian-speaking areas, frankly, but you could’ve worked a deal.”
Hannity later played excerpts of the interview on his Fox Primetime show but those comments were edited out.
