Donald Trump said on Friday that he is seriously considering issuing pardons to his supporters charged in connection with the Capitol on Jan. 6 if he wins reelection.
“January 6 defendants are having their lives totally destroyed and being treated worse than terrorists and murderers, despite most being charged with parading through the Capitol,” Trump said during his speech at a ‘Faith and Freedom’ event in Nashville, Tenn.
“And if I become president, someday if I decide to do it, I will be looking at them very, very seriously for pardons. Very, very seriously,” he added.
Trump has teased the possibility of running for president in 2024 but he is yet to make an official announcement.
This is not the first time Trump has floated the idea of pardoning Jan. 6 defendants if he ends up the White House again. He told a rally of his supporters in Conroe, Texas earlier this year that if he becomes president in 2024, he will “treat those people from January 6 fairly” and “if it requires pardons we will give them pardons because they are being treated so unfairly.”
