Donald Trump is urging the select House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to open an investigation into his Vice-President Mike Pence for refusing to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Trump argued that his supporters would not have stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 if Pence had rejected electoral college votes from key battleground states that Biden won.
“The Unselect Committee should be investigating why Nancy Pelosi did such a poor job of overseeing security and why Mike Pence did not send back the votes for recertification or approval, in that it has now been shown that he clearly had the right to do so!” Trump said a statement on Tuesday.
Trump’s renewed attack on Pence’s ceremonial role in the certification process comes as reports say senators are open to considering reforming the Electoral Count Act of 1887 so it can no longer be abused in the way Trump did to try and ignore the will of the people.
Trump’s argument is, since senators are open to reforming the act, it proves Pence could have overturned the election as he was being pressured by Trump and his allies to do.
Last week, Pence made it clear that he and Trump are no longer close. He told Fox News that he hadn’t spoken to Trump since last summer.
