Donald Trump claims “nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11” at the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tournament which is being held at his Bedminster, New Jersey, club.
Asked by a reporter about the families of the victims of 9/11 planning to protest the event because of Saudi Arabia’s involvement, Trump said: “Nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11, unfortunately”.
He called the terrorists responsible for 9/11 “maniacs” and referred to the attacks as a “horrible thing to our city, to our country, to the world.”
“But I can tell you that there are a lot of really great people that are out here today, and we’re gonna have a lot of fun, and we’re going to celebrate. Money’s going to charity—a lot of money’s going to charity,” Trump added.
The 2001 attacks killed nearly 3,000 people. Reports from the intelligence community have suggested that Saudi Arabia was at least somewhat linked to the attacks, according to Newsweek. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi citizens.
The Saudi government has consistently denied any involvement in the 9/11 attacks.
The PGA Tour suspended more than a dozen players last month because of their participation in the LIV Golf tour and several top golfers have criticized the tournament.
The chair of the organisation 9/11 Families United, Terry Strada, also criticized the tour.
“We’re very disappointed in the players. We’ve tried to point out to them, I wrote them a letter when this all began,” Strada said. “We are in the courtrooms with a lawsuit against the kingdom. The kingdom actually provided the support network that was needed for the first arriving hijackers and most likely all of them to set up what they needed to plan, practice and carry out the attacks.”
