Former President Donald Trump lashed out at the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot after members of the panel voted unanimously to subpoena him for his role in the insurrection.
“Why didn’t the Unselect Committee ask me to testify months ago?” Trump asked in a post on his social media app, Truth Social. “Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly – A laughing stock all over the World?”
At the end of Thursday’s hearing, the committee voted 9-0 to subpoena the former president for testimony about the days leading up to and on the day of the insurrection.
Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said the committee had an “obligation” to hear from Trump.
“This is a question about accountability to the American people. He must be accountable. He is required to answer for his actions. He’s required to answer to those police officers who put their lives and bodies on the line to defend our democracy. He’s required to answer to those millions of Americans whose votes he wanted to throw out as part of his scheme to remain in power,” Thompson said.
It is not likely that Trump will cooperate with the committee, which he repeatedly slammed as a politically motivated witch hunt. He is expected to fight the subpoena which could take months, extending beyond the midterm elections next month.
