A group of Trump supporters who called themselves an “election integrity committee” are reportedly knocking on doors in York County, Pennsylvania demanding to know how residents voted in the 2020 presidential election and for whom.
According to the York Dispatch, the county’s Commissioner Julie Wheeler and other local officials say they received numerous calls about the individuals knocking on doors claiming to be members of the committee and demanding to know who voted for.
“I received some emails from residents who live in the southern part of York County,” Wheeler said. “I’ve spoken with the individuals, and we’ve turned the matter over to law enforcement.”
Wheeler emphasized that the “election integrity committee” is not affiliated with the county’s government.
The group’s efforts seems to be targeting Democrats in the county in an effort to seek out voter fraud, and comes as county officials are weighing whether to comply with a “forensic audit” of the 2020 election spearheaded by state Sen. Doug Mastriano, the York Dispatch reports.
“There is an intimidation factor, and that’s what their intent is,” said Chad Baker, chair of the Democratic Party of York County. “The timing of this doesn’t seem suspect given the recent request of the audit by Sen. Mastriano.”
Steve Snell a local Democrat who lost an election for a state House seat in 2018 said he witnessed the group’s tactics first hand. He told York Dispatch that two women claiming to a part of the group knocked on his door on Saturday and asked to speak with his 89-year-old mother-in-law.
“They did not ask who she voted for,” Snell said. “If they had, I would have thrown them out. I regret that I was not more persistent in asking about the ‘committee’ that they said they represented.”
Trump won York County in the November presidential election. But, claims of widespread voter fraud have become a rallying cry for his supporters in the months after the election.
State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Trump ally who denies the election results, has asked the Republican controlled board of commissioners to conduct an audit of the county’s election process similar to the ill-fated forensic audit being conducted in Arizona by the Cyber Ninjas.
For now, the commissioners does not seem to be on board and has questioned the legality of the senator’s demand, the cost to the county and the lack of staff necessary to fulfill the request.
