Donald Trump supporters are annoyed with the former president after his much hyped ‘major announcement’ turned out to be a new line of digital trading cards.
On Wednesday, Trump took to Truth Social to tease a ‘major announcement’. Given its timing, some Trump supporters speculated that the announcement was probably related to a long-shot bid for House Speaker or at least related to his inactive 2024 presidential campaign.
But, on Thursday the former president excitedly announced a new line of digital trading cards available on sale for $99 each. The cards has his cartoon face imposed on a variety of costumes, including an athlete, astronaut, superhero and a cowboy.
Trump was widely mocked and even some of his staunchest supporters were disappointed by the announcement.
Robby Starbuck, a GOP congressional candidate for Tennessee’s 5th district tweeted: “This is not good. We’re facing a threat to civilization from far left Marxist extremists. Teasing NFT cards as a major announcement is not the kind of fight people want to see now. These are dark times. Love the guy but this turns many off.”
“If this is the #MAJORANNOUNCEMENT it is embarrassing and a slap in the face to Trump’s base,” former congressional aide Daniel Bostic wrote. “People are struggling and losing their country. They’re begging for real action – not childish stunts like this.”
Ron Filipkowski, an attorney who tracks right wing conspiracy theories tweeted screenshots of Trump supporters reacting to his announcement on Thursday writing: “I never seen MAGA react like this to anything Trump has ever done.”
“Unserious move during very serious times. Shame on you….sir,” one Trump supporter wrote.
“Has trump lost his mind really trading cards how the f*** is that going to help the country” wrote another.
Others were so turned off by the announcement that they decided to drop Trump for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“So, this seriously was Trump’s big announcement. What a massive let down. I’ve been holding my doubts about Trump for a while, but I think this might be the final nail in the coffin. I’m going team DeSantis now,” a now former Trump supporter wrote.
DeSantis has not formally announce he is running for president but he is already proving to be a formidable opponent to Trump in the GOP primary.
A USA Today-Suffolk University poll out this week shows the Florida governor with a 23 point lead over Donald Trump, 56% to 33% among Republicans and Republican-leading independents. A Wall Street Journal poll also released this week shows DeSantis with a 52% to 38% lead over Trump among Republican voters.
