After months of railing against mail-in voting claiming that it will lead to wide-scale voter fraud, Donald Trump is now reversing course, atleast in Florida.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Trump encouraged Floridians to “request a ballot and vote by mail”, claiming that the state’s election system is “safe and secure.”
“Whether you call it Vote by Mail or Absentee Voting, in Florida the election system is Safe and Secure, Tried and True. Florida’s Voting system has been cleaned up (we defeated Democrats attempts at change), so in Florida I encourage all to request a Ballot & Vote by Mail! #MAGA.”
Trump may have been referencing the out of court settlement between voting rights group and the state last month, that saw all parties involved declaring victory.
Just last week Trump floated the idea of delaying the 2020 elections because it would be the “most INACCURATE & FRAUDULENT Election in history” if universal mail-in voting were implemented.
Once again, there is no evidence that mail-in voting leads to fraud.
Trump’s attacks on mail-in voting have caused Republicans to worry that it may backfire and result in a lower turnout among Republican voters this fall. And in a state where he’s trailing Joe Biden by double digits, with less than 100 days left before the election he needs all the help he can get.
