Trump became convinced in the final days leading up to last Wednesday’s vote in Congress that Mike Pence could somehow overturn the results of the election if he wanted to.
As a result of this wrong belief he increased pressure on Pence to force him to do just that, reportedly telling him that he has two choices about how history will remember him in that moment.
According to the New York Times, Trump told Mike Pence that he can either be remembered as a “patriot” if he overturned the results of the election in Congress or a “p*ssy” if he didn’t.

During Wednesday’s attack on the Capitol by his supporters, Trump tweeted that Pence did not have the courage to do what should have been done, as some of his supporters were calling for Pence to be hanged.
“Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!” Trump said.
