Trump wins CPAC straw poll, DeSantis a distant second.

Donald Trump overwhelmingly won the Conservative Political Action Conference’s (CPAC) straw poll on Saturday and his main rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished a very distant second.

Trump received 62 percent of the vote, while DeSantis got 20 percent. Perry Johnson, a businessman from Michigan who announced his bid for the GOP nomination for president this week, came in third with 5 percent. Former UN ambassador in the Trump administration, Nikki Haley, got 3 percent.

Failed Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate, Kari Lake was CPAC attendees top choice for vice-president, receiving 20 percent, while 14 percent of CPAC attendees would like DeSantis as VP.

Trump easily won CPAC straw polls since he was elected in 2016 so this year’s results is not surprising considering that the conference has become more Trumpian in recent years. Also, other potential rivals like DeSantis and former VP Mike Pence did not attend this year’s conference.

Haley, who spoke at this year’s conference was greeted with chants of “Trump! Trump! Trump!” by his supporters as she was leaving.
