Trump's education secretary, Betsy DeVos, calls for the Department of Education to be abolished.

Former Secretary of Education in the Trump administration, Betsy DeVos, called for the abolition of the federal Department of Education in a speech on Sunday.

According to the Florida Phoenix, DeVos, a keynote speaker at the “Moms For Liberty” summit in Tampa, Florida told the audience: “I personally think the Department of Education should not exist.”

Her comments were well received by those in attendance.

The three-day summit is part of the parental rights movement which trained members from 30 states on how to create conservative majorities on their local school boards.

The ‘parental rights movement’ was formed in Florida during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to fight mask wearing and other efforts to limit the spread of the virus in schools.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) also spoke at the event Friday and explained his reasoning behind banning what he calls ‘woke’ math textbooks in Florida.

“These math books, they were doing woke math,” DeSantis said. “And I was thinking to myself ‘two plus two equals four right’? Not two plus two equals well, how do you feel about that, is that an injustice? No, we gotta teach the kids to get the right answer.”
