Donald Trump’s former spiritual advisor called him an “elementary schoolchild” after the former president announced his third bid for the White House on Tuesday.
President of Life Outreach International, James Robison, said at a meeting of the National Association of Christian Lawmakers (NACL) on Wednesday, that he spoke with Trump regularly on the phone during his four years in the White House and that he would not follow his spiritual advise, according to the Washington Post.
Robison recalled one conversation where he told Trump he is childish and is his own enemy.
“Sir, you act like a little elementary schoolchild and you shoot yourself in the foot every morning you get up and open your mouth,” Robison recalled. “The more you keep your mouth closed, the more successful you’re gonna be.”
At the meeting Robison also criticized Trump for constantly engaging in “petty issues,” adding that conservatives should “get together and pray and stop trying to destroy each other.”
“We’ve got to quit amputating each other, slicing each other, and come together in supernatural unity that Jesus Christ prayed for,” he said.
Several Republicans and allies of Trump are trying to distance themselves from him after Republicans disappointing midterm performance-which they blamed on the former president -and after his announcement to run for the White House again.
Robison is not the only evangelical leader who is not on board with Trump, yet, this time around.
Pastor at the First Baptist Dallas church in Texas, and one of Trump’s staunchest evangelical allies, Robert Jeffress, told Newsweek on Wednesday that he is not endorsing Trump yet.
“Donald Trump was a great president, and if he becomes the GOP nominee in 2024 I will happily support him,” Jeffress said. “The Republican Party is headed toward a civil war that I have no desire or need to be part of. My priority is being pastor of First Baptist Church Dallas and preaching God’s word to millions of people each week on our television and radio broadcasts.”
