Man impersonating police murders former Democratic House speaker, shoots second Dem lawmaker in their homes in Minnesota.

Two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot in separate incidents by a man impersonating a police officer.

The victims are identified as state senator John Hoffman and Democratic House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman. Both are members of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party.

Hortman and her husband Mark were fatally shot. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also shot multiple times and are both out of surgery.

The suspect is on the run. He is reportedly a white man with brown hair wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants. Police say he is armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

Police issued a shelter-in-place order at 5:30 a.m. for a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh Golf Course.

“Do not answer door unless two officers approach together. Call 911 to verify officer identity first,” Brooklyn Park Police said in an emergency alert.

State officials are describing the shootings as “targeted attacks.”

“I’ve been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park,” Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) wrote. “The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon.”
