Two people were shot Thursday afternoon at Memorial Park in Uvalde, Texas about two miles from Robb Elementary School where 21 people were killed earlier this year.
The shooting occurred around 5:30p.m and is believed to be gang-related. Two people were shot and injured including a 22-year-old and a juvenile, San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT reports. Both were conscious when they were airlifted to a San Antonio hospital, according to police.
Four suspects are in custody and being questioned in connection to the incident.
The shooting occurred near the Uvalde town square, where a makeshift memorial was established to honor the victims of the May shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, according to CNN.
Aubriella Ibarra was a third grader at the school on the day a gunman murdered 19 children and two teachers. She still suffers from PTSD and depression and was at the park with her mom, Celeste, on Thursday.
The family was getting ready to leave when the shooting began.
“A lot of kids were ducking and diving again,” Ibarra told CNN. “It was horrible.”
“I was outraged to learn that gang violence has endangered the Uvalde community and innocent Texans this evening,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement Thursday night. “I immediately called Mayor Don McLaughlin and County Judge William Mitchell to offer the state’s full support and resources as law enforcement hunts down the gang members.”
“Working with the Uvalde Police Department and Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office, DPS is also deploying Special Agents to target the five gangs operating in Uvalde,” he added. “Thank you to all local and state law enforcement and first responders who swiftly went into action to protect their fellow Texans. Gang violence has no place here in Texas, and we will bring the full force of justice down on these heinous criminals.”
