Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb slammed Judge Aileen Cannon on Thursday after the New York Times reported that she rejected calls from senior judges to recuse herself from Donald Trump’s classified documents case.
The Times reported that Cannon, a Trump appointee, was urged to step away from the case by two judges including Southern District of Florida Chief Judge Cecilia Altonaga, after it was assigned to her last year but she refused.
Since then, Cannon has made several rulings that were shot down by the ultra-conservative 11th Circuit Court and has been accused of slow-walking the case to ensure it does not go to trial before the election.
Case in point, Cannon is holding a hearing Friday on Trump’s motion to dismiss the classified documents indictment against him on the argument that special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment was unconstitutional.
In an interview with CNN’s OutFront Thursday, Cobb called Cannon’s decision to hold a hearing on Smith’s appointment “silly.”
“The fact she doesn’t deny most of these motions without a hearing is silly,” he said, according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite. “The fact that Trump can get a hearing on the flimsiest arguments is shocking.”
Cobb added that if Cannon rules in Trump’s favor it would be just the thing to get her kicked off the case.
“The worst thing that could happen to her is that she actually does rule for Trump on this because that would go to the 11th Circuit and then I think this petty, partisan prima donna would be put in her place and they would remove her,” he said.
