The Uvalde school district suspended the entire district police force amid fallout from the May 24 shooting at Robb Elementary School that left two teachers and 19 students dead.
The district said in a statement that it suspended all activities of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department “for a period of time.”Â
“The District remains committed to resolving issues with verifiable evidence. Decisions concerning the UCISD police department have been pending the results of the Texas Police Chiefs Association and JPPI investigation. Recent developments have uncovered additional concerns with department operations,” the statement said.
The department consisted of five officers and one security guard, according to their website. It is not clear for how long the department officers are suspended but, in the meantime, district officials are asking the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide additional troopers for campuses and at extracurricular activities. Â
The suspension of the entire police department comes one day after Officer Crimson Elizondo was fired within hours after she was hired to work in the department. Elizondo is under investigation for her actions on May 24 while responding to the shooting at Robb Elementary.
Elizondo, a DPS trooper at the time, entered the hallway at Robb Elementary within two minutes of the gunman entering the school. She was not carrying a rifle or wearing a vest, breaking standard protocol.
On body cam footage obtained by CNN, Elizondo is heard telling officers at the scene that if her son was in the building, “I would not have been outside. I promise you that.”Â
In the statement on Friday, the district said results of the JPPI investigation “will inform future personnel decisions” and the review currently being conducted by the Texas Police Chiefs Association “will guide the rebuilding of the department and the hiring of a new Chief of Police.”
