Volunteer for Sen. Raphael Warnock’s campaign shot while canvassing.

A campaign volunteer for Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) was shot while canvassing in Savannah, Georgia on Thursday, according to WSAV.

Savannah Police Department say they responded to reports of a shooting around 5:30pm Thursday evening in downtown Savannah. Officers found a 15-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg when they arrived on the scene.

Witnesses say the teen was going door-to-door campaigning for Sen. Warnock ahead of the runoff election next Tuesday. He was reportedly at the front door of the residence when the owner fired a shot through the closed door.

Police have identified the suspect as Jimmy Paiz, 42. He has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Police are still investigating but so far the shooting does not appear to be politically motivated, WSAV reports.

“I am saddened to learn about this incident,” Warnock said. “I am praying for the victim and their family and wish them a full recovery.”
