Waffle House adds 50 cents surcharge per egg amid rising prices.

The Waffle House restaurant chain is putting a 50 cent per egg surcharge amid rising prices.

“The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices,” Waffle House said in the statement to CNN. “Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.”

“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the company said.

The company continues to monitor egg prices and said that it will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.

An aggressive strain of bird flu is hurting supply since it has resulted in farmers slaughtering millions of chickens a month.

The Agriculture Department predicts egg prices are going to soar another 20% this year.
