Former Vice-President and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden paid their respects to civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis as he lays in state in the Capitol Rotunda on Monday.
John Lewis had endorsed Joe Biden for president in April, telling reporters on a conference call, “it is my belief that we need Joe Biden now more than ever before.”
Congressman Lewis paired his endorsement at the time with a recommendation that Biden choose a woman of color as his running mate. “I think Vice President Biden should look around. It would be good to have a woman of color,” Lewis said.
Biden’s trip to Washington comes as Donald Trump told reporters that he would not be visiting the Capitol to pay respects to Lewis.
Congressman Lewis died on July 17, ending a six months-long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years old.
