Evidence of a growing rift between the White House and Markwayne Mullin was on full display this weekend, with one White House official telling POLITICO that frustration with Homeland Security Secretary is the one thing uniting the Trump administration,

“It takes a lot to unite this administration around a cohesive point of view,” a senior administration official told Politico’s Playbook. “Mullin deserves credit where credit is due. Everyone agrees he sucks donkey butt.”

The official’s comments come as Mullin faces backlash from Trump’s MAGA base over remarks he made at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Oklahoma City on Saturday, in which he advocated reforms, including expanding permanent visas.

“If we’re looking to grow our economy, we need more permanent solutions on [work visas], because this narrative that it steals American jobs is true in some industries; it’s not true for all industries,” Mullin said.

“It is America. We want to take care of Americans first. It’s our economy, it’s our homeland, but there’s a way to utilize labor where we’re not having the participation rate we need to, and we can plug those holes,” he added.

After backlash from MAGA, Mullin tried to walk back his comments on Twitter, writing: “NO amnesty for illegal aliens. Ever. We are a nation of laws. If you are illegally present in the United States of America— you will be detained and deported. Period.”

The damage was already done, and MAGA now views Mullin as soft on immigration and wants him to go.

“MAGA wants President Trump to detail ‘Pitbull’ Pulte to DHS,” Steve Bannon told Playbook. “Mullin is the wrong guy at the wrong time for the wrong job — a time when we need focus on ‘mass deportations,’ we get an amnesty advocate.”

Also, Mullin’s friendly interaction with Gov. Wes Moore (D-MD) on Saturday and his “surprisingly chummy” relationship with Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, both likely 2028 Democratic presidential candidates, is not improving his standing with MAGA diehards.

“He’s a people pleaser, and that doesn’t work when you’re a Cabinet official,” another White House official told Playbook.

A DHS spokesperson defended Mullin in a statement, telling the outlet: “We are all focused on delivering on the President’s mission to deport illegal aliens and protect the homeland. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to sow division and create an illusion of chaos.”

The White House also insists that Trump is still standing by Mullin.

“The President has confidence in Secretary Mullin and his entire Administration to carry out the agenda the American people voted for,” White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson told Playbook.
