Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the police on a black bird watcher in Central park will face a misdemeanor charge over the incident, the Manhattan District Attorney said on Monday.
Cooper faces a charge of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, according to the DA.
“Our office will provide the public with additional information as the case proceeds,” DA Cy Vance Jr. said according to CNN. “At this time I would like to encourage anyone who has been the target of false reporting to contact our office. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable.”
In May, Amy Cooper was walking her dog in Central Park Ramble when she encountered bird watcher, Christian Cooper (no relation) who told her to leash her dog as the park rules require. In the video of the encounter, Amy Cooper could be heard frantically telling the police that a black man was threatening her and her dog.
She lost both her job and her dog because of the incident. She later apologized and claimed that Christian Cooper was yelling and she overreacted because she did not know what was in the treat he offered to her dog.
Amy Cooper was issued a desk appearance ticket and she is scheduled to be arraigned on October 14.
