A Maryland woman was arrested on Thursday after she shot her husband in a Washington D.C. hotel room for allegedly sexually abusing children at her day-care business in Maryland.
According to WUSA9, officers responded to a call about a man being shot on the 8th floor at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel around 7:40 p.m. Police was told that a fire alarm went off in the room and when staff went to investigate they saw blood on the wall.
When officers approached the hotel room, the woman, identified as Shanteari Weems, 50, began talking to them through the door. When officers asked her if someone had been shot inside, she responded, “fuck him, he’s a child molester.”
At one point during the nearly half hour long negotiation to try and get Weems to open the door, the victim told officers he had been shot in the head and leg to which Weems responded: “Shut the fuck up, I will kill you.”
Officers forced their way into the room after they confirmed that the victim was inside and in need of assistance.
Weems was detained and charged with assault with intent to kill. She was held without bond, and is due in court Monday.
Weems is the owner of Lil Kidz Kastle day care in Ownings Mills, Maryland. She told officers that numerous children at the day care recently told her that her husband had been molesting them. She said she reported her husband to the police.
Her husband has been identified as a retired Baltimore City Police officer. He has not been charged with a crime and is recovering from gunshot wounds to the leg and head that did not appear to be life-threatening, police say.
Weems told officers she just wanted to hurt her husband, not kill him. She said she wanted to kill herself.
Among the items found at the scene were handwritten notes including an apology to the children she worked with saying, “I didn’t know,” WTOP reports.
