Woman faces charges for hurling racial slurs at Black child.

Shiloh Hendrix, a woman who was caught on camera earlier this year  hurling racial slurs at a Somali child with a disability, will be charged.

A draft complaint was filed by Rochester City Attorney Michael Spindler-Krage charging Hendrix with three counts of disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and/or $1,000 fine, according to Minnesota Public Radio. The draft complaint is subject to review and approval by a District Court judge.

“This was a situation that deeply affected many people, especially our communities of color, and caused real turmoil in our community,” Rochester Mayor Kim Norton said. “We acknowledge the lasting impact this incident has had, not only on those directly involved and across our community, but also in the broader conversations happening at the state and national level.”

Hendrix was captured on video in April using the n-word in reference to a 5-year-old Black child at Soldiers Field Memorial Park playground in Minnesota.

She repeated the slur to the man recording the video. At one point she told the man that the Black child was “digging through my shit” and took something belonging to her child.

When the man says “and for that you call him a [N-word]?” she says “Yes. If he acts like one then he’s going to be called one.”

Hendrix said at the time that she received threats, and she started an online fundraiser that raised hundreds of thousands to help her relocate.

The Rochester branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) released a statement praising the decision to charge Hendrix.

The NAACP called the charges “both important and appropriate” and “represents an important and meaningful first step toward accountability and justice”.
