An attorney representing several members of the pro-Trump that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 compared their plight to that of Jesus Christ.
“Jan-Sixers are being fed to the lions for sport in DC & the FBI is targeting practicing Catholics, labeling us—extremists,” Attorney Joseph D. McBride wrote on Twitter. “Evil has never been bolder, & good people, never more afraid to stand. Stand we must, nonetheless. Never forget, Jesus was killed for being an ‘extremist.'”
McBride represents several insurrectionists, including Richard Barnett, the man who was pictured with his foot on then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk during the insurrection.
Barnett was convicted by a federal jury last month on all eight counts for his role in the insurrection and faces up to 47 years in prison. He is due to be sentenced on May 3.
McBride told reporters at the time that Barnett did not get a fair trial in Washington, DC, because the jury was made up primarily of “Biden voters.”
“We’re not saying there is something inherently wrong with DC or with the jurors.” McBride said. “We’re saying that we believe politics is the big elephant in the room that nobody wants to speak about here and political considerations about this trial have damaged the jury pool to the extent that we can’t get a fair trial.”
They plan to appeal the ruling.
