One day after a federal grand jury indicted former Trump White House adviser Steve Bannon on two charges of contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena from the bipartisan committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack, GOP congresswoman Lauren Boebert (Colo.)is threatening Democrats with ‘politically motivated indictments’ if Republicans take control of the House in 2022.
“Now that Democrats have started these politically-motivated indictments for Contempt of Congress, I look forward to seeing their reactions when we keep that same energy as we take back the House next year!'” Boebert wrote on Twitter.
Boebert’s threat came after Rep. Jim Jordan, the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee claimed President Biden “has evicerated [sic] Executive Privilege” and indicated that Republicans would subpoena testimony from current members of the Biden administration if they retake the majority.
In refusing to testify, Bannon claims he is taking directions from former President Donald Trump, who said he would exert executive privilege over the committee’s move.
What Boebert and Jordan may not understand is that executive privilege applies to sensitive communications with the president. Also, Bannon was not working in the Trump White House during the Jan. 6 riot. That’s unlike Chief of Staff Ron Klain and National Security advisor Jake Sullivan who currently works at the White House and whose testimony could be covered by executive privilege.
The committee has largely rejected Trump’s arguments on executive privilege, arguing that President Biden currently holds that authority which he has waived to release documents to the committee.
