Donald Trump’s former national security advisor, Michael Flynn called for a single religion in the US on Saturday.
“If we are going to have one nation under God, which we must, we have to have one religion,” he said while speaking on “Reawaken America” Saturday night. “One nation under God, and one religion under God.”
Though Flynn did not mention a religion it is safe to assume he is talking about Christianity since right wing christofascists and their allies insist that the United States was designed to be a Christian nation and that the country’s laws should enforce the doctrines of Christianity, more specifically, their version of Christianity.
That does not change the fact that the U.S. Constitution is a wholly secular document. It only refers to religion twice in the First Amendment:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
And in Article VI, which prohibits “religious tests” for public office. Therefore, Flynn calling for a single religion is unconstitutional since everyone in the United States has the right to practice their religion, or if they choose, no religion at all.
Flynn, who served just 22 days as Trump’s national security adviser, has become a popular figure in the far right QAnon movement and has made controversial comments in the past. He endorsed the idea of a Myanmar-style military coup to reinstate Donald Trump as president after accusing President Biden and Democrats of election fraud. He also joked about finding “somebody in Washington, D.C,” while holding an AR-15 in July.
