A Donald Trump supporter who assaulted then-D.C police officer Michael Fanone and another officer during the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on Tuesday.
38-year-old HVAC worker from Iowa, Kyle Young, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson to 86 months in prison and three years of supervised release. He also must pay $2,000 in restitution.
According to the Department of Justice, Young was among a mob of rioters participating in the assault of law enforcement officers in the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol and the Archway that leads into the building.
Young admitted that he used a strobe light to disorient police, helped throw a large audio speaker at police, and grabbed Fanone’s wrist when he was dragged from the police line by the mob. Video also revealed that he handed a taser to the rioter who used it to electroshock Fanone in the neck.
Young pleaded guilty in May to a felony count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers.
“When Young spotted Officer Fanone being pulled into the crowd, he purposefully moved toward the attack, and joined at a pivotal moment — restraining Officer Fanone’s wrist by pulling it away from his body seconds after the officer was repeatedly tased and amid shouts of ‘kill him with his own gun,'” prosecutors said.
Young’s restraint allowed other rioters to further assault Fanone and took his badge and police radio.
He apologized to Fanone at his sentencing hearing on Tuesday but the former cop did not accept his apology, telling Young that he hopes he suffers in prison.
