Chief Justice John Roberts blamed the SCOTUS abortion leak on “one bad apple” and said he hopes it will not change the public’s perception of the court.
Roberts made the comments while speaking at a meeting of lawyers and judges at the 11th Circuit’s judicial conference in Atlanta on Thursday.
Roberts called the unprecedented leak of the draft opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, “absolutely appalling,” adding that he hopes “one bad apple” would not change “people’s perception” of the Supreme Court, according to CNN.
He also said that if “the person” or “people” behind the leak think it would affect the work of the court, they are “foolish.”
This was Roberts second time responding to the leak that Politico published on Monday.
In a statement on Tuesday he called the leak a “betrayal of the confidences of the Court intended to undermine the integrity of our operations.”
“This was a singular and egregious breach of that trust that is an affront to the Court and the community of public servants who work here,” he added.
The Marshal of the Court is investigating the source of the leak.
