Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) says Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) does not have the votes to hold on to the speaker’s gavel this Friday, despite President-elect Donald Trump endorsing him.
“Right now, I don’t believe he has the votes on Friday,” Roy said Tuesday on “Varney & Co.” on Fox Business.
“I remain undecided, as do a number of my colleagues, because we saw so many of the failures last year that we are concerned about that might limit or inhibit our ability to advance the president’s agenda,” he added.
Also on Tuesday another House Republican Rep. Rich McCormick (R-Ga.)told NewsNation that he is not firmly in Johnson’s camp yet.
“We have decisions to be making, and we have to discuss with each other—about 10 people who are leaning,” McCormick said. “And what that means is we want reassurances. I’m not really sure we’re taking the debt seriously. I’m not really sure we’re doing the right things.”
This comes as two other Republicans—Reps. Victoria Spartz and Andy Harris— this week also expressed skepticism of Johnson.
Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) has said publicly that he will not support Johnson.
If Massie follows through with his plan and oppose Johnson, the Louisiana Republican can only afford to lose one other vote to hold on to the speaker’s gavel.
