House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) is privately “fed up” and “done with” the effort to impeach President Joe Biden and is searching for an off-ramp.
Republicans have accused Biden of benefiting and being influenced by his son, Hunter, foreign business dealings while serving as vice-president. But after months of investigation they are yet to provide any evidence to support their claim.
Now Comer, the man leading the investigation, is ready to throw in the towel.
According to CNN, Comer recently approached one of his Republican colleagues and told the lawmaker that he is ready to be “done with” the impeachment inquiry into Biden.
“Comer is hoping Jesus comes so he can get out,” an unnamed GOP lawmaker told CNN. “He is fed up.”
However, Comer told CNN that “the impeachment inquiry is ongoing and impeachment is 100% still on the table.” He swiped at reporters when asked if any Republican had privately voiced frustrations to him about the inquiry.
“I don’t even want to talk to you,” he said. “If you don’t think they were influence-peddling, there’s nothing to say. My God.”
As House Republicans impeachment effort fizzles, Comer and other Republicans leading the investigation are searching for an off-ramp.
Comer himself have suggested that instead of pushing for a Senate trial, House Republicans could send criminal referrals to the Justice Department so that a future Trump administration can prosecute if Republicans win back the White House in November.
House Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) also told CNN that criminal referrals are “on the table”.
“The Constitution doesn’t put a time limit on oversight,” he added. “So, we’re going to do our job thoroughly and then at some point the House of Representatives will decide if we’re going to move forward with articles of impeachment.”
