Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) accused far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) of making racist comments during a House Oversight Committee meeting on Thursday that went off the rails.
“She is racist. I mean, I don’t have any questions about that,” Crockett told reporters Friday, referring to Greene’s comments at the meeting about her “fake eyelashes”
“I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading,” Greene said after Crockett asked if she knew why the committee was meeting.
Crockett noted Friday that Greene never went after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) appearance amid their ongoing beef.
“Her and Boebert aren’t getting along. Boebert has clip-ins in her hair. And Boebert wears lashes, too, sometimes, but she doesn’t attack her for any of her, She doesn’t do that, right? But she decided to do it to me. So absolutely she’s a racist,” Crockett said.
“She probably will raise money, because the racists are going to be so happy to give it to her,” she added.
The House Oversight Committee met Thursday to mark up a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt for not turning over audio recording of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur. House Republicans already have the transcript of the interview.
The meeting descended into chaos after Greene’s remark about Crockett’s eyelashes. The comment prompted outrage from Democrats and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) demanded that Greene apologize to Crockett.
“It is not lost on me that Ms. Green targeted one of the only Black women on the committee for some of the most egregious and disgusting comments and with the expectation that it will be ignored,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters Friday.
More chaos ensued at the Oversight Committee meeting when Crockett asked if a hypothetical comment, which appeared to be a veiled shot at Greene, would break protocol.
“I’m just curious, just to better understand your ruling,” Crockett said. “If someone on this committee then starts talking about somebody’s bleach blond bad built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?”
