Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear was projected to win re-election in Kentucky.
Beshear defeated Republican state Attorney General and Donald Trump-backed Mitch McConnell protègè, Daniel Cameron to win a second term in the governor’s mansion.
Beshear’s victory, in a state Biden lost by about 26 points in 2020, is a welcome sign for Democrats ahead of next year’s presidential race.
Though Beshear built a brand in Kentucky separate from the National Democratic Party, he leaned into the issue of abortion, highlighting Cameron’s support for a total abortion ban in true state with no exceptions for rape or incest.
