Truth Social CEO and former congressman Devin Nunes hilariously declared that Trump’s new social media app, Truth Social has dethroned Twitter and turned it into a “ghost town” even though Truth Social has failed to attract a large audience.
Nunes appeared on Fox News on Thursday to sell the app to the more conservative audience but not even the usually obsequious Maria Bartiromo was buying it.
Asked about Tesla CEO Elon Musk joining Twitter’s board of directors after purchasing a 9.2% stake in the company, Nunes said: “The goal that President Trump has, and what I have and our team here at Truth Social is to open the internet back up so the American people can get their voice back. So it’s clear that Twitter is kind of a ghost town. They desperately need Elon Musk to be there, so it is probably something that Elon wants to do. I think he probably believes in free speech like we do, but at the same time, there is not very much activity other Twitter right now especially when you compare to sites like ours where we’re just in our beginning stages as we continue to test and bring people on day by day. Our interactions already beating Twitter.”
Even though Truth Social was launched two months ago, the site continues to grapple with issues regarding security, staff members are fleeing and there’s still a long waitlist. On top of that, some people who were allowed on the site are complaining about censorship even though it claims to support free speech and the stock price for the parent company has plummeted along with downloads. According to the Washington Post, the app is no longer on the Apple charts.
Trump does not even use the app and is reportedly considering joining their competitor Gettr.
Later in the interview Bartiromo was joined by Wall Street investor Lou Basenese who also grilled Nunes about Truth Social’s poor performance especially when compared to Twitter.
“There are things that line up more to be short your stock than long your stock,” he told Nunes. “I would love to see the interaction, but I have been waiting six weeks, and I’ve only gone down 30,000 people on the waitlist.”
Basenese also questioned whether Truth Social would exist if Donald Trump was allowed back on Twitter.
“Twitter is a house of cards and a ghost town,” Nunes responded, prompting Basenese to interject: “Sir, there’s 217 million users there though. It’s not a ghost town.”
