Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) criticized California Gavin Newsom (D) for secretly running for president against Joe Biden at an Iowa Democratic Party dinner over the weekend.
Fetterman told attendees at the event there are two Democrats “running for president right now” other than Biden, according to NBC News.
“One is a congressman from Minnesota, the other one is the governor of California, but only one has the guts to announce it,” Fetterman added.
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) launched a primary challenge to Biden for the Democratic party nomination for president last month.
Newsom has repeatedly denied that he is positioning himself to run for the White House. However, recent moves such as his trip to Beijing where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, and his decision to participate in a televised debate with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) are seen as attempts to raise his profile for a potential run at a higher office.
Even Newsom’s critics are taking notice.
“The man is running for president, doing it and doing it in disguise, doing it with a track record at a state that is more disastrous by the day,” Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy said last month, according to NBC News.
