The principal of a Florida school who was ousted from her position because parents complain that Michelangelo’s masterpiece ‘David’ is “pornographic” got to visit the statue in person last week.
Hope Carrasquilla said the Leon County School Board gave her an ultimatum to resign or be fired after she showed a photo of the statue during a sixth grade Renaissance art history lesson at Tallahassee Classical School, according to The Washington Post.
After the story went viral, the Mayor of Florence defended Carrasquilla and the museum housing the ‘David’ invited the teacher, parents and students from the Tallahassee Classical School to see the piece up close.
“To think that ‘David’ could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding Western culture and not understanding Renaissance art,” Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell’Accademia said at the time.
Carrasquilla took the museum up on their offer and went to the see the statue in Florence on Friday.
“I am happy to be able to welcome her and introduce her to the beauties of our museum, besides showing her the David, a sculpture that, I repeat as I have said, has nothing to do with pornography,″ Hollberg said in a statement, according to Insider. “It’s a masterpiece, it represents a religious symbol of purity and innocence, the victory of good over evil.”
“I am sure that Mrs Carrasquilla will find here, in Florence, the welcome and the solidarity that she deserves,’’ she added.
