Florida professor cancels civil rights lesson because student was uncomfortable.

Students in the U.S. government class at Eastern Florida State College were given a free period earlier this month after their professor canceled his lesson on civil rights because one student in the class was not comfortable with the topic, according to WESH 2.

“The topic was civil rights, no specific bit of it, just in general. As far as I’m aware. So the teacher basically had to cancel this class of about 20 students in total because of the student’s discomfort,” Jacob Dailey, a student in the class told the outlet.

Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, Republicans in Florida have passed legislation to limit how race is taught in state schools. Last year, DeSantis signed into law legislation that bans educators from teaching certain topics that make students feel guilt or shame about their race because of historical events.

In a statement, John Glisch, the associate vice president at Eastern Florida State College, said the professor is “working with his supervisors on alternative ways to handle such potential problems to ensure future classes can continue.”
