Former Missouri senator who endorsed Josh Hawley now calls that decision the "worst mistake" of his life.

Sen. John Danforth the former Republican senator from Missouri who endorsed Sen. Josh Hawley in the 2018 Republican primaries now regrets that decision calling it the worst he has ever made.

“Supporting Josh and trying so hard to get him elected to the Senate was the worst mistake I ever made in my life,” Danforth said in a phone interview with St. Louis Today.

“Yesterday was the physical culmination of the long attempt (by Hawley and others) to foment a lack of public confidence in our democratic system. It is very dangerous to America to continue pushing this idea that government doesn’t work and that voting was fraudulent,” he added.

Several Republicans have criticized Hawley for proceeding with his objection of the Electoral College results from Pennsylvania even as some of his colleagues reversed their decision after the Capitol was stormed by an angry mob of Trump supporters.

Danforth says he hopes Wednesday’s events would be a turning point for the country and for the Republican Party.

As for Sen. Hawley, Danforth says he’s “doing real harm. What he’s doing to his party is one thing. What he’s doing to the country is much worse.”

A far cry from just three years ago when the retired senator said Hawley is a “special talent” who would bring keen intellect to the chamber.
