Embattled Republican Congressman Rep. George Santos (NY) admitted to dressing in drag in the past, but said he is not a drag queen.
Two of Santos former acquaintances told Reuters that he used to compete in drag beauty pageants in Brazil.
“I was young and I had fun at a festival” Santos told TMZ on Saturday. The freshman lawmaker, who is openly gay, said he does not like the label, telling the outlet he “was not a drag queen.”
On Friday, Politico reported that Santos appeared to have admitted to his drag past in an old Wikipedia entry under the name Anthony Devolder, a known Santos alias.
The user wrote that that he “startted his ‘stage’ life at age 17 as an gay night club DRAG QUEEN and with that won sevral GAY ‘BEAUTY PAGENTS.'”
Santos claimed on Thursday that the reports saying he performed in drag in the past were “categorically false”.
The news of Santos’ drag past comes as Republicans continue to attack drag shows, claiming that they are harmful to children.
