Half of Americans in a new poll say Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is a fascist.

In a new ABC News/Ipsos poll, 49% of registered voters say Trump is a fascist. Pollsters defined a fascist as “a political extremist who seeks to act as a dictator, disregards individual rights and threatens or uses force against their opponents.”

Meanwhile, only 23 percent of registered voters say the same of Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Along party lines, 87 percent of Democrats call Trump a fascist, compared with 46 percent of independents and 12 percent of Republicans. Meanwhile, 41 percent of Republicans, see Harris as fascist, 20 percent of independents and 3 percent of Democrats.

Interestingly, the poll was conducted before The New York Times published an interview in which Trump’s former chief of staff, retired Gen. John Kelly said the Republican nominee “certainly falls into the general definition of fascist, for sure.”

Kelly also told The Atlantic about disturbing conversations he had with Trump in which he said Nazi leader Adolf Hitler did “some good things” and that he needed “the kind of generals that Hitler had.”

Other top Trump administration officials including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Mark Milley and former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper have also said Trump is a fascist.

This ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted online between Oct. 18-22, 2024, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 2,808 adults, including 2,392 registered voters.
