The House Judiciary and Oversight committees are prepared to move forward with a resolution to hold the president’s son Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress.
The Oversight Committee said it will hold a markup on Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. ET to prepare the contempt resolution for a vote in the House at a future date, according to NBC News.
Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell slammed the move in a statement saying: “It’s clear the Republican Chairmen aren’t interested in getting the facts or they would allow Hunter to testify publicly. Instead, House Republicans continue to play politics by seeking an unprecedented contempt motion against someone who has from the first request offered to answer all their proper questions. What are they afraid of?”
Biden was scheduled to appear last month for a testimony behind closed doors with the House committees leading the impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden.
But, Biden defied the subpoena. He appeared on Capitol Hill on the day he was scheduled to testify and delivered remarks reiterated his promised to only testify publicly.
“I’m here today to make sure that the House committees’ illegitimate investigations of my family do not proceed on distortions, manipulated evidence and lies.”
House Republicans accused President Biden of improperly benefiting or was influenced by his Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings while serving as vice-president. They are get to produce any evidence to support their claim.
“Let me state as clearly as I can: My father was not financially involved in my business. Not as a practicing lawyer. Not as a board member of Burisma. Not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not my investment at all nor abroad, and certainly not as an artist,” Hunter said at the press conference on Capitol Hill.
“There’s no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business, because it did not happen,” he added.
