Is California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) related to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)? Short answer: no, but it’s complicated.
In the wake of the recent devastating and deadly fires in California, some MAGA supporters have been claiming that Gov. Newsom is the “nephew” of Pelosi and will therefore be protected from facing any consequences amid the fallout from the fires.
Newsom and Pelosi are two of the most prominent Democrats in California and in the country. For a while they were distantly related by marriage.
In 1960, Gavin Newsom’s aunt, Barbara Newsom, married Ron Pelosi, the brother of Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi. This means that during that time Newsom was the nephew of Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law by marriage.
However, the familial connection between Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi ended when Barbara and Ron divorced in 1977.
To put that into perspective, Gavin Newsom would have been 10-years-old at the time.
So no, Gavin Newsom is not related to Nancy Pelosi since the marriage that linked their two families ended decades ago and he’s not her nephew.
