Republican congresswoman Rep. Lauren Boebert (Colo.) made a rare apology Friday after she compared Rep. Ilhan Omar(D-Minn.) to a suicide bomber while meeting with her district during the Thanksgiving weekend.
“I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar,” wrote Boebert on Twitter. “I have reached out to her office to speak with her directly. There are plenty of policy differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction.”
A video posted to Twitter by ‘Patriot Takes’ on Thursday showed Boebert at a campaign event telling her supporters about a supposed run-in with Omar on Capitol Hill.
Boebert said she was getting on an elevator at the Capitol with a member of her staff when they saw a worried Capitol Police officer running towards them. Boebert said she looked to her left and saw Omar on the elevator and told the officer, ‘well she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine.”
Boebert said she then turned to Omar and added, “Oh look, the Jihad Squad decided to show up for work today.”
After the video went viral Omar responded, saying Boebert’s story is “made up.”
“Fact, this buffoon looks down when she sees me at the Capitol, this whole story is made up. Sad she thinks bigotry gets her clout,” Omar said. “Anti-Muslim bigotry isn’t funny & shouldn’t be normalized. Congress can’t be a place where hateful and dangerous Muslims tropes get no condemnation.”
