Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell is so done with Donald Trump to the point where he has no plans to ever speak to the former president again, according to a Washington Post report.
According to the Post, McConnell has not spoken to Donald Trump since Dec. 14, the day he acknowledged President Biden won the November election. That is unlikely to change anytime soon since sources told the newspaper that McConnell “does not plan to ever speak with him again,” and even their top aides have cut off contact.
The rift between the two men grew wider this week when Trump broke his posts presidency silence to issue a scathing rebuke of McConnell, calling him a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack.” This came after McConnell blamed Trump for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot after he voted to acquit him.
The divide is likely to threaten Republicans’ hopes of regaining the majority in the Senate. Trump has made it clear that he’s ready for a nasty primary battle against any candidate that does not support his ‘Make America Great Again’ agenda and McConnell is trying to move the party away from Donald Trump.
It’s likely to become a Trump vs McConnell battle and while Donald Trump’s hold on the Republican party base all but ensures that his candidate will win a primary, they will likely lose the general election especially in swing states.
