House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is confident there will not be a government shutdown after reaching a new deal.
The package would fund the government at current levels through March 14, extend the farm bill by one year and appropriate billions of dollars in disaster aid and assistance for farmers.
It is the same provisions as the bill that failed in the House Thursday with one key exception—no raising the debt ceiling as Donald Trump demanded.
“We will not have a government shutdown,” Johnson said. “And we will meet our obligations for our farmers who need aid, for the disaster victims all over the country, and for making sure that military and essential services and everyone who relies upon the federal government for a paycheck gets paid over the holidays.”
It’s also not clear whether Democrats will support the new package while they wait to see the details.
Republicans expect they will vote on the package on Friday, with less than 12 hours remaining until a shutdown deadline.
