More than 100,000 people have signed a petition seeking to bar Donald Trump from running for public office again.
The petition from progressive campaign group, MoveOn, is urging Secretaries of State, state election officials, and members of congress to disqualify Trump from the ballot because he violated the 14th Amendment with his actions on Jan. 6.
“Donald Trump and his associates planned, promoted, and paid for a criminal conspiracy that became the January 6 insurrection,” the petition reads.
It continued: “According to the U.S. Constitution, that disqualifies him from ever holding office again. Section three of the Fourteenth Amendment, the “insurrection clause,” makes clear that anyone who engaged in attempting to violently overthrow the US government after swearing an oath to protect it is barred from being given that responsibility again.”
The petition seeks 200,000 signatures and as of Dec.5 it received 126,273.
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment disqualifies a person from seeking public office again if that individual has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” after taking a congressional oath. It has been used in other cases to try and block Republicans from seeking office, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Georgia) and Madison Cawthorn (N.C).
A judge dismissed the case against Greene in May and Cawthorn lost his Republican primary.
