Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) is criticizing the decision by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his announcement that Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan’s execution will be livestreamed.

“There is no need to livestream any execution, including this one,” Murkowski said on Twitter. “I would expect this from terrorists and dictators, but not here in America.”

Murkowski also argued that the plan to livestream Hasan’s death by firing squad could potentially backfire.

“It would give this individual, who deserves no further notoriety, the martyrdom he seeks,” she continued. “How we carry out justice matters just as much as the justice itself, so I urge the Pentagon to reverse this gruesome decision.”

Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and injured 32 others in a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Hegseth told far-right podcaster Jack Posobiec in an interview on Wednesday, drawing swift bipartisan backlash.

Hasan should face the death penalty, but making his execution public and streaming it? Beyond disgusting,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) wrote in a post on Twitter. “Public executions are what oppressive dictatorships like Iran and Afghanistan do. It should not be happening in America.”

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut also condemned the plan.

“What, is he mimicking ISIS executions? I mean, I understand that in this country we have the death penalty, but public execution is medieval,” Murphy said in an appearance on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.”

“That is just absolutely extraordinary, galling,” he continued, “No matter whether you support or oppose the death penalty, public hangings and executions? That’s what America has become? … That’s pretty extraordinary.”

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) called on the Trump administration to remove Hegseth from his post “immediately.”

“There is no doubt that Nidal Hasan is a murderer who took the lives of 13 people and injured dozens. He should face justice for that. But a public execution? Here in the United States?” Kelly wrote in a Friday Twitter post.
