House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Thursday that she will not seek re-election to the leadership of the House Democratic caucus.
Pelosi, the first female speaker of the House will step down after two decades as the Democratic Party’s leader in the chamber.
“With great confidence in our caucus I will not seek re-election to Democratic leadership in the next Congress,” Pelosi said in a speech on the House floor.
Pelosi’s announcement comes one day after Republicans were projected to win the House with a slim majority after the midterm elections.
It also comes weeks after her husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked in their San Francisco home.
