Police seek arrest of GOP congressman over alleged assault.

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department sought the arrest of Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla. over an alleged assault at an apartment building last week.

According to NBC Washington, an unsigned warrant for Mills’ arrest was sent to a federal prosecutor on Friday. Police said the case was sent back to them for further investigation.

The outlet noted that this back-and-forth is not uncommon and doesn’t always result in charges.

NBC Washington reported last week that the victim told police that her “significant other for over a year” allegedly “grabbed her, shoved her, and pushed her out of the door” resulting in bruises on her arm.

The victim also reportedly allowed officers to listen to a recorded phone call where Mills allegedly told her to lie about how she got the bruises.

The woman later told news outlets in a statement that while there was an argument, it never turned physical. She also claimed that the bruises officers who responded to the scene saw on her arm “were the result of medical conditions like eczema and activities from my recent trip to Dubai.”

Mills, who is married, denied any wrongdoing in a statement issued by his office Friday.

“This week, law enforcement was asked to resolve a private matter at Congressman Mills’ residence,” the statement read. “Congressman Mills vehemently denies any wrongdoing whatsoever, and is confident any investigation will clear this matter quickly.”

Mills further denied the allegations in an interview at the Capitol on Monday.

“Both myself and the other individual said that what they’re claiming took place never took place and that’s been reported multiple times,” he said according to Politico. “That’s why the prosecutor, [when] MPD tried to even push it forward, denied prosecution or any follow up.”

The incident report indicated that Mills, a married man, had used some kind of force with hands or feet against the woman.

Police in DC are required by law to arrest someone “if there is probable cause to believe they committed an intrafamily offense resulting in physical injury, including pain.”

Asked on Monday why MPD attempted to issue an arrest warrant, Mills responded, “That’s something for them.”
